Questions
An exhaust fan that vents directly outdoors, not into the attic or crawl space, is the starting point. Building code sizes that fan in cfm, the cubic feet of air it moves each minute. The code calls for at least 50 cfm when the fan runs now and then, or 20 cfm when it runs nonstop. A fan sized and vented that way clears shower steam before it settles into the walls.
Moisture control is the key to mold control, and the EPA advises keeping indoor humidity around 30 to 50%. Run the exhaust fan while you shower, and dry anything that gets soaked within 24 to 48 hours of it getting wet. Mold can hide behind drywall, and a leak behind a bathroom wall can carry water to the hardwood floors in the next room, so have any leak checked early.
Scope sets the price: keeping fixtures where they are costs far less than moving plumbing, and the amount of tile matters too. The fixtures, vanity, and countertop you choose come next. In a home built before 1978, work that disturbs more than 6 square feet of painted surface in a room falls under the EPA's lead-safe rule, which adds steps. Retiling the floor, not just the shower, adds to the price, since new tile floors add square footage to lay.
Homeowners say so. People surveyed by the National Association of Realtors and NARI, the remodelers' trade group, for their 2025 Remodeling Impact Report scored a bathroom renovation 9.8 out of 10 for the joy it brings. Resale value varies by market, but most people remodel a bathroom for the use they get from it every day. Some homeowners find it worth planning bathroom and kitchen remodeling together so the work happens in one stretch.
It depends on how much changes. Swapping a vanity or fixtures is a short job. Taking the room down to the studs for new tile, plumbing, and a new shower takes longer. Fixtures on back order can push the start. Tile also needs its setting materials and grout to cure before the room goes back into use. Adding a second bathroom onto the house is handled as a home addition.
