Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A 2022 report from the Realtors' and remodelers' national groups (NAR and NARI) put new wood flooring at a median cost of $5,500, with an estimated $6,500 recovered at sale, or 118% of the cost. Solid hardwood can also be sanded and refinished many times over its life.

It can, after a moisture test. The National Wood Flooring Association's installation guidelines call for testing a slab before any wood floor goes over it, with a moisture barrier when the readings run high. A slab that gets wet again from rain, leaks, or flooding has to dry out before flooring goes down. The same test applies to the new slab under a custom home.

The material and square footage set most of the price. What is underneath comes next: old flooring to take up, a subfloor to repair, or a slab that needs a moisture barrier. Under National Wood Flooring Association guidelines, swollen, flood-soaked plywood is replaced, and the area dries before new flooring goes down. Tile in a kitchen remodel adds layout work and movement joints, the gaps that let tile expand and shrink.

There is no set number of days for the wood to sit. It is ready when moisture readings show the wood and the subfloor have settled near the moisture level they will hold in that room. The one fixed wait is for the house itself: the heating and cooling should run for at least 5 days before the wood arrives. In a humid climate, a wood subfloor should stay at or below 13% moisture content.

The prep sets the schedule: taking up old flooring, any subfloor repair, and the moisture readings that tell when wood can go down. Tile also needs its setting materials to cure before heavy use. New tile in a bathroom remodel has to cure the same way.
