Questions
No single month is best, since the weather on the day matters more. Sherwin-Williams advises painting outside only on a dry surface, and stopping early enough that the paint dries before the evening dew settles. Direct summer sun can make paint dry too fast and weaken how well it sticks. Inside work, such as painting after a kitchen remodel, has no such limit.
Sherwin-Williams advises waiting at least a day after a heavy rain, and longer for wood and masonry. Poor drying conditions shorten a paint job's life and can lead to mildew growth in a humid climate.
The size of the house, the prep work, the number of colors, and repairs to wood and trim set most of the price. Exterior work also depends on how much old paint has to be scraped off, and interior work on how many walls, ceilings, and trim pieces get painted. Painting right after new windows go in lets the new trim be painted at the same time.
The EPA's lead-safe rule covers paid painting work on a pre-1978 house once it disturbs more than 6 square feet per room inside or more than 20 square feet outside. Scraping and sanding old exterior paint usually passes that line quickly. Interior demolition before a repaint, such as pulling painted trim in an older house, often passes it too.
Size and prep set the schedule. Scraping, repairs, and priming can take as long as the painting on an older house, and outside work has to stop for rain and wait for surfaces to dry. On a new home, painting starts on bare drywall and ends with the finished trim.
